RE: DIOCESE OF PARAÑAQUE STATEMENT AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY

In union with the local churches of the Philippines, we, the Diocese of Parañaque reiterate our unequivocal opposition to the re-imposition of the death penalty in the Philippines. As Filipino Catholics who respect and follow the laws of the land, we are nonetheless beholden to the life-giving teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ, who came to the world to redeem sinners, and taught us that not even the greatest sinner is beyond redemption. While we continue our utmost support to the government’s efforts to uphold peace and justice in our land, and while we agree that criminal offenses should have corresponding sanctions or penalties, nevertheless, we maintain that death penalty is an incommensurate penalty that will only serve to respond to violence with more violence, evil with even more evil.

Though the death penalty bill may have been approved in the House of Representatives, the fight for what is moral and truly just continues. As Christians, we continue to have our voices heard, especially as the death penalty bill undergoes the corresponding legislative process in the Senate. Remaining faithful disciples of Jesus, led and empowered by the Holy Spirit, let us continue championing life for all!
