DOP CIRCULAR NO. 2018-050
09 May 2018
|TO:||ALL PARISH PRIESTS, PARISH ADMINISTRATORS, RECTORS, CHAPLAINS, GUEST PRIESTS, RELIGIOUS PRIESTS, and LAY MINISTERS IN THE DIOCESE OF PARAÑAQUE|
|RE:||ERRATUM ON DOP CIRCULAR NO. 2018-048|
Dear Fathers, Monsignori, Brothers and Sisters:
In view of DOP CIRCULAR no. 2018-048, with subject REMINDERS REGARDING THE POSITION OF THE CHURCH ON THE UPCOMING ELECTION ON MAY 14, 2018 which was released on 03 May 2018, we wish to make the following correction:
Item No. 4, which states – “After election, win or lose, if they still deem to resume their ministry, they may do so, provided they have to write a formal letter to their proper parish priest stating their intent of resuming in their ministry.”
“2b. In case of election or appointment as public official, whether national or local, the minister shall RESIGN from active duty in order to avoid any future conflict of interest.
The above mentioned correction is based on the Handbook of Lay Liturgical Ministries, Varia 2b, released in 2011.
Wherefore, guidelines should be read as,
- That church facilities should not be used for any “partisan” political purposes.
- That parish priests should avoid accommodating a specific political party or any individual political candidate to sponsor a mass and more so to stand as offerors.
- That any church lay leaders and ministers who are running for elective positions should be asked to take a temporary leave from their parish responsibilities. They have to submit to their proper parish priest a formal letter, stating their reason of being temporarily excused from their parish services.
- In case of election or appointment as public official, whether national or local, the minister shall RESIGN from active duty in order to avoid any future conflict of interest.
For your understanding and compliance.
JESSE E. MERCADO, D.D.
Bishop of Parañaque
