SUBJECT: CELEBRATION OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTION 2018
Dear Fathers, Monsignori, Brothers and Sisters:
Peace in Christ Jesus!
The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary which is celebrated on 8 December falls on a Saturday this year.
As stated in the Table of Liturgical Days, the Office and Mass of the solemnity shall be followed only from the previous evening to afternoon of that day, since the evening Mass and Office should follow that of the 2nd Sunday of Advent.
Because of this particular situation, we would like to issue the following pastoral guidelines:
- Parishes and religious communities are allowed to celebrate a Vigil Mass of the solemnity on the early evening (i.e. 6:00 PM onwards) of Friday, 7 December. The Mass reading and formulary to be used will be that of the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception itself.
- As stated in the DOP circular 2012-076, in the event of the said solemnity falling on a Saturday, “We decree, therefore, that those who participate in the evening Masses of Saturday fulfill both their 8 December and Sunday obligations.” Thus, parishes will still celebrate their usual “anticipated” Sunday Masses on that day. But, to give reverence and recognition to Our Lady, a short act of veneration (e.g. incensation of her image, floral offering and/or coronation, a Marian hymn) may be done before the final blessing or during the recessional of the Mass.
Please be guided accordingly.
